Mace and pepper spray

What is mace?
Mace is a non-lethal personal defense weapon. There are many types of mace, but the form sold for use by the public is commonly known as "pepper mace." Pepper mace is an irritant, causing immediate watering of the nose and eyes, and a burning sensation to the face, if used effectively. Mace comes in a spray form and is used to possibly incapacitate an attacker for a short period of time.

How to use mace

Spray mace directly into an attacker’s face, preferably in an upwind situation. Use only enough to affect the attacker. Leave the area, go to the nearest phone and call 9-1-1.

Where to purchase mace

Mace can be purchased at local hardware or department stores in the area. Mace sells for about $5 to $12, depending on where it is purchased and the size of the container. A key chain model may provide one or two effective sprays to the face, and sells for around $5.

Safety warnings

Carrying mace may lull users into a false sense of security. Mace is a self-defense weapon, so make sure you have the proper mindset to use it if you need it, and know what to do to ensure it is not taken away from you and used against you by an attacker.

Since mace is a spray, there is a chance that it could adversely affect the victim due to overspray or by spraying it into the wind and having it blow back into your face.
