Frequently asked questions

I just want to pay my fines. Do I still have to come to court?
If all violations charged on your traffic ticket have a specified fine amount, you may choose not to appear in court, but to pay fines and fees prior to your court date. If any violation charged on your traffic ticket specifies “Court,” you must appear in court on your Notice to Appear date.

Payment information can be found on the traffic ticket given to you by the police officer. You may pay at the clerk’s office, at the night depository, online with a credit card, or by phone with a credit card.

Do I have to pay court costs if I’m just paying my ticket and not coming to court?

Yes. By city ordinance, a court cost is assessed on each case filed with the court. Court costs include administrative costs and fees paid to the State of Kansas.

I have a ticket for no proof of insurance. How do I take care of this violation?

If you had insurance coverage on the vehicle you were driving at the time the ticket was issued, you may bring proof of that coverage to the court clerk’s office. If you did not have insurance coverage on the vehicle at the time the ticket was issued, see the No Proof of Insurance Amendment information to learn more about your options.

I have a ticket for driving with a suspended driver’s license. How do I take care of this violation?

The Driving While Suspended Amendment information explains your options for this violation.

Can I change my court date?

The court clerks may grant one continuance from the Notice to Appear date on your traffic ticket or complaint, unless charges involve a victim. You would be granted a one-time, one-week continuance to another Arraignment Docket.

What can I do to keep a moving violation from appearing on my driving record?

Certain violations are eligible to be amended from a moving violation to a non-moving violation by the court clerk. Please refer to the Amendments Not Requiring a Court Appearance to see the requirements and eligible violations. For violations that are not eligible for amendment by the court clerk, you must appear on your court date and speak with a prosecutor about the moving violation not being recorded on your driving record. The prosecutor will consider your driving record and the circumstances surrounding your traffic offense. If the prosecutor agrees to amend your moving violation to a non-moving violation, fine amounts are generally doubled and all fines and fees are to be paid immediately.

I would like to speak with an attorney about my ticket. Who should I call?

You may contact the Kansas Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service at 800.928.3111 or Kansas Legal Services at 800.675.5860 for assistance in finding an attorney.

How can I find the status of my driver’s license or get a copy of my driving record?

Contact the state in which you are licensed:

Kansas Motor Vehicle Department, Department of Revenue

Missouri Department of Revenue, Driver’s License Bureau
www.dor.mo.gov/index.htm

What happens if I miss my court date?

Call the court clerk’s office at 913.477.7600 to ask about the status of your case. The Judge may have ordered a warrant for your arrest due to your failure to appear in court. The court may also have requested that the state suspend your driving privileges. Kansas state law allows the court to submit outstanding fines and fees to a private agency for collection which may result in additional costs of up to 33 percent of the balance due.

What should I do if I have a warrant?

You may post your bond anytime at the Lenexa Police Department and will be given a court date to appear before the Judge. The bond may be paid with cash, credit card or through a surety bondsman. You should appear at the Police Department with identification.

How do I get to the jail?

Persons who are to report to the jail should go to the New Century Adult Detention Center in Gardner, Kansas.
