To apply for a building permit for a residential new construction project, complete a permit application and submit with the following required information:
- Two sets of plans sealed and signed by a Kansas Licensed architect or engineer.
- A copy of the sewer or septic permit must be submitted prior to permit issuance. Sewer permits are obtained through Johnson County Wastewater District No.1 (913.681.3200). Septic permits are obtained through Johnson County Environmental (913.492.0402).
- Two original, legal plot plans, signed and sealed by a civil engineer or land surveyor registered in the state of Kansas. The plot plan must include property address and legal description, property dimensions, contour lines, proposed structures and distances to property lines, building lines, location of outside utilities, easements, rights of way and decks.
- Square footage of the first and second floors, garage, finished and unfinished basement, and decks must be listed on the permit application.
- Contractor licensing and insurance must be on file with the city before obtaining the permit.
If you're using the same plan for several locations, you can submit a master plan that we will retain. This process will expedite future plan review time. Plans are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis by a plans analyst.
You will be contacted when the review is completed. Additional information is contained in the Residential Construction brochure.
Expiration
Permits expire after 180 days if no inspections have been performed. An approved inspection extends the permit another 180 days.
Penalty
Half the original fee may be required to reinstate the permit if it expires. The permit fee is subject to doubling if construction begins without a permit.
