About us

The Department of Community Development consists of the following areas:

Planning/Development Services

This division administers zoning and the development review process for the city, and provides staff support to the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. Land Use staff, along with other affected departments and divisions, works to process and review development applications and miscellaneous permits, including signs. They also provide long-range planning and demographic research services, and are responsible for the administration and updating of the city's Comprehensive Plan and the continuous updating of the City Profile, including demographic and development-related data about Lenexa and its environs.

Engineering/Construction Services

This division oversees the planning, engineering design, and construction of the city's Capital Improvements Projects (CIP). Staff identifies projects to improve and maintain streets, rehabilitate existing infrastructure, address drainage issues, and construct trails and sidewalks. This division also provides the engineering support for the development review process, including the review of both private development plans and public improvements proposed in conjunction with private development.

Right-of-Way/Traffic Management

Lenexa's Traffic Management strives to provide a safe and efficient travel system for vehicles and pedestrians navigating the city's streets. While this is done in part by installing appropriate traffic control devices such as traffic signals, traffic signs, and roundabouts, the traffic staff also conducts numerous traffic counts per year, maintains streetlights and assists in the setup and take down of most city sponsored events. This group also manages the public right-of-way, and conducts specialized research and analysis. Rights-of-way and easements are normally used for purposes such as constructing streets or placing gas, water, electric, telecommunication cables, sewer and storm sewer lines.

Neighborhood/Building Services

This division administers the city's building and other construction-related codes and provides staff support to the Uniform Building Code Board of Appeals. Division staff review plans for code compliance as well as conduct inspections of work underway. The Community Standards Division provides enforcement of property maintenance and zoning codes through systematic inspections and response to complaints.

The front line Customer Service Staff also functions under this division. The Customer Service Representatives are responsible for the daily customer service activities and support of the Neighborhood/Building Services Division. This staff assists external and internal customers with a variety of inquiries and requests, including building plan submittals, construction permits, business and animal licensing, alarm permits, rental housing licensing and registration.
